Elaine Stritch on Madison Ave

Last night, I was walking by The Carlyle hotel, when I spotted a poster of Elaine Stritch in the

window. I have always wanted to take her photo, but have never had the chance. I walked a few

blocks down Madison Ave and all of the sudden I saw Ms. Stritch walking towards me. I knew this was my chance to finally take her photo.I went up to her and told her that I was working on a book about style and she quickly replied with a smile, " Oh that's wonderful good luck." I asked if I could take her photo, but she kindly refused. A few moments later she turned around and said, " Okay go ahead." I had only a few seconds to get a shot, but I will forever remember my interaction with this 86 year old legend.

Alice Carey in Vintage Bill Blass

Think Pink

Debra Rapoport has taught me that dressing should be fun.Every time I see her she is wearing a wonderful combination of clothes that she has either thrifted or has been gifted. At 66, she dresses for herself and doesn't worry about what other people think.Check out her amazing accessories, mostly made from recycled materials!

Advanced Style at the IFB Conference

This summer has been super busy for Advanced Style. I have been shooting a special story for a German fashion magazine, working on my book, and planning a fashion week event with the Ace Hotel and Tavi. I was thrilled to be asked to speak on a panel at this year's IFB Conference. If you are in New York, you should definitely check it out. More details about my panel below:

Evolution of Fashion Media

3:30-5:00 pm
Gone are the days when fashion media was all about glossy magazines and red carpet photos. As mainstream media moves online, how do blogs differentiate themselves from fashion sites? This panel–an IFB Conference first–will touch on this and more.

Moderated by: Ann Colville Somma, HolierthanNow • Panelist: Mr. Mickey, PaperMag • Mary HK Choi, MTV Style • Claire Sulmers, Fashion Bomb Daily • Ari Seth Cohen, Advanced Style • Joyce Chang, People Style Watch •  Christian Remrod,  Fashion Networks

"The Object is to Look as Chic as You Can, but Your Average Person in the Street Would Never Wear This."

Writer, Alice Carey, learned about style from the ladies who lived off Park Avenue, in New York, during the 50s and 60s. Her family immigrated from Ireland, and her mother was a maid for a chic set of women, who purchased hats from Hattie Carnegie and shopped at Bergdorf's. As a young girl, Alice soaked all of this in. Her style philosophy is, "The Object is to look as chic as you can, but your average person in the street would never wear this." For more of Alice's story check out the videos below:

lace flares

Found these absolute dreams at H&M last week (I almost did a little dance and a scream, but managed to keep it together) As soon as I recover from my monster throat infection that has had me bed ridden for over a week, I plan on never taking these off! I suggest that everyone go and buy a pair right now. Boys included. Thank you H&M.

Black and White

I stopped this elegant woman on the Upper West Side and asked if I could take her photo. When I asked about her style she exclaimed, " I'm old enough to be comfortable with my own style and not be subject to the whim of designers." I couldn't have said it any better myself. Do you feel that style advances with age and experience?

(leather jack topshop boutique, denim shirt topshop, bag h&m, rings both topshop)

At the moment I keep getting really bored with having my hair down and since I'm so into plaits, I decided to go the whole hog and rock some Heidi-style over the head plaits for the day. I teamed my new "do" with massive wedges, a denim shirt and leather jacket to ensure that I didn't look about 5 years old. The weather in England is bleak (and that's being kind) it seems like we're not getting a Summer this year so Im already thinking Autumn Winter..... and I much prefer the cold so it suits me just fine! Hope you're all having a lovely weekend and its sunnier/riot-less where you are. Penny

High Street Hottie

...Just casually stumbled upon this little beauty on Topshop.com...... I wondered how long it would take someone to come up with a YSL copy, and here it is! grab it here before it goes!!!

Fashion Advice From a 79 Year Old

I met up with Joyce the other day to get one more shot for my book. I met her outside a department store on the upper west side, a few months ago, and have loved working with her ever since. At 79 years old, Joyce believes, " To age is a privilege". I have shared her  great style tips before, but for another reminder check out the fashion advice below:
1.”Gloves they make an outfit, if it’s the right glove it can do everything for you.”
2.”Getting a good black dress that you can fix up with different wonderful colored scarves.”
3.”Marvelous Jewelry, it doesn’t have to be real or expensive, a strand of pearls can make an outfit.”
4.”A wonderful large fiocco, a beautiful bow or boa.”
5.” The right neckline, if you have a beautiful Décolletage then by all mean shows it.”
6. “I look for the brightest colors in shoes, don’t be afraid to wear them with a dark dress. A bright scarf and shoes and gloves of the same color will stand out against the black background of a dress or suit.”
7. ”The older you get the more elegance you want, you can use great color, but in an elegant way.”
8.”Don’t be afraid to be unique to be different.”
9.”Fishnet stockings, Incredible.”
10. “The real secret is being in love with life and realizing what you have.”

More Is Never Enough

A while back my good friend Mary told me that, "Accessories are your Successories." I can tell by Judith's jewelry, in the photo above, that she must be a firm believer that more is never enough.

Nancy Ozelli-Model Off Duty

I stopped model, Nancy Ozelli, on her way home on the Upper East Side. She is proof that beauty and style really do advance with age.

"Don't Retire-Retread Your Tires."

I came across this wonderful video interview of Lucy Jarvis, while researching her for a story I am shooting. She has such a great take on life and aging. Lucy believes that life doesn't stop at 65, in fact it just keeps getting more fun. My favorite things she says is ," Don't Retire-Retread Your Tires." She is a great inspiration and I can't wait to photograph and interview her next week.

100 Year Old Ruth Says,"Celebrate everyday and don't look at the calendar."
